Cyber criminals wanted to hack into the customer accounts of lottery players.

For security reasons, many websites went offline temporarily after the hacker attack.

Kassel – Due to a cyber attack, numerous lottery players were unable to place their bets online at the beginning of the week.

This is reported by the dpa

news agency

.

According to this, there were cyber attacks all over Germany.

According to a Lotto spokeswoman, whether private customer data was actually tapped has not been clarified and has not yet been determined.

According to the dpa

report, suspected cyber criminals

tried to access customer accounts at the turn of the year and at the beginning of the week.

As a result, Lotto temporarily shut down the internet services of many national companies for security reasons.

Most of the pages are now online again, as reported by hna.de.

Hacker attack: Lotto informs customers about password security

"Our customers' data and their security are our greatest asset," explains Hannah Strobel, spokeswoman for Lotto Niedersachsen.

Although some customers there were also affected by the cyber attack, the website of the Landes-Lotterie-Gesellschaft Niedersachsen did not have to be taken offline due to the quick internal reaction, according to Strobel.

Those responsible for the state lottery company sent customers from Lower Saxony an information letter regarding password and data security.

Lotto informed those affected that to be on the safe side, the accounts have been blocked and passwords must be changed.

Hacker attack on Lotto: Gambling provider reacts with security instructions

According to a

dpa

report, a similar approach was also heard in other federal states, such as in Brandenburg, where, according to a press spokeswoman, abnormalities were found in 235 of around 50,000 user accounts.

Lotto Hessen also reacted, posting a note on their homepage shortly after the nationwide incident on how customers can make their passwords more secure.

Accordingly, customers could do the following to ensure more data security on the network themselves:

  • Change the password periodically.

  • Make sure that the password is not too short.

    It should have at least 8 characters;

    the longer the better.

  • It should contain a combination of all available characters, such as upper and lower case letters and special characters.

  • However, the special characters should not be added to a simple word at the beginning or end, but integrated into a more complex word.

  • If possible, the selected password should not appear in dictionaries.

Hacker attacks and data theft happen again and again, most recently also on Whatsapp, as recently during the Christmas season.

The operators try to take protective measures, and the consumer center also draws attention to the problems of data security and fraudulent tactics on the Internet and by telephone and provides tips for Internet users on their homepage.

Many websites of the lottery portals are back online after a hacker attack

For better understanding: Players who want to play Lotto 6aus49 online can prepare their ticket on the general lottery platform lotto.de, which in turn is then sent to the respective websites of the state lottery companies.

Cyber criminals tried to hack this interface to the individual state websites by acquiring customer data on the dark web.

Accordingly, each lottery company regulated the procedure for its respective website independently.

According to the Lotto spokeswoman, there was no central control.

In the meantime, the security precautions of many national companies have been completed and the respective websites are online again.

The lottery companies are in close contact with the authorities and criminal charges have been filed.

Lottery players who gave their tip in the shops are not affected by the incident.
