With nearly $7.4 billion in box office receipts, up 65%, the United States has once again become the world's largest movie market, according to data from Box Office Mojo.
Ahead of China, which fell by almost 40% and totaled barely 4.4 billion dollars, or 3 billion less than last year.
The reign of the Middle Kingdom over world cinema lasted only two years.
Worldwide, cinema ticket sales rebounded nearly 27% to $26 billion, according to Gower Street Analytics estimates.
The sector as a whole has recovered, without however recovering all its strength.
