Mexico deploys tanks, 7 dead in clashes for El Chapo's son

With the government mobilizing armored vehicles on the streets being stormed by armed members of the narco cartel.

    Images show cars reduced to fireballs and huge plumes of black smoke in the sky.

According to the governor of the state, Ruben Rocha, 7 members of the security forces were killed, 21 agents and 8 civilians were injured.  


Ovidio Guzmán López, son of drug trafficker Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán, captured yesterday in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, will not be extradited soon to the United States which requests him to be tried, because the formalities required by Mexican law must first be completed.

In statements to the press, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard explained in this regard that "we could not extradite him today, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, because we have to respect the formalities that the law imposes on us".

Ebrard confirmed that the US extradition request exists, however he rejected the media hints that the arrest of Ovidio Guzmán was arranged as a "welcome gift"

to President Joe Biden who will arrive in Mexico on Sunday to participate with Canadian Prime Minister Justine Trudeau and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador at the X North American Leaders' Summit (January 9-10).

Together with his brother Joaquín, if extradited, Ovidio Guzmán will have to face a trial before the Federal Court of the District of Columbia (Washington, DC) for the crimes of criminal association for the transfer to the USA of large quantities of cocaine, marijuana, amphetamines, methamphetamines and other synthetic drugs.

The head of Mexican diplomacy also denied that US agents participated in the operation carried out yesterday by the Mexican authorities to carry out the capture.
