Child supplement was increased in 2023 - what conditions must be met?

Last year, the maximum amount of the child supplement was 229 euros, since January 1, 2023 it has been 250 euros.

Families receive child supplements if their income is not sufficient to support the child.

As a rule, unmarried children up to the age of 25 are entitled to the child supplement.

However, various conditions must be met in order to be able to apply for child allowance.

First of all, the child must live in the household of the parents or legal guardians.

It also depends on the income of the parents.

They must provide evidence of their income for the last six months before submitting the application.

This includes income from self-employment or employment subject to compulsory insurance.

Income also includes short-time work benefits, unemployment benefits, maternity benefits, parental benefits and BAföG.

Whether the child supplement is paid out must be calculated individually in each case.

The factors for the calculation are your own income, housing costs, the size of the family and the age of the children.

How much child supplement will families receive in 2023?

The gross income must be at least 900 euros for couples and 600 euros for single parents.

If the money is not sufficient to cover the entire needs of the family, there is an entitlement to child allowance.

The employment agency gives some examples to show families if a claim could exist.

If a single parent pays just under 490 euros in rent including heating for a child, the required income may be between around 1200 euros and 2700 euros gross in order to be entitled to the child supplement.

If the rent including heating is 790 euros, the gross income may be between 950 and 3900 euros.

If there are two children in a family, the requirements change: With a rent including heating of 690 euros, the gross income can be between 1200 (single earner) and 4350 euros (double earner).

The more children live in a household and the higher the rent, the more income the family can receive.

Just like the application for child benefit, the application for the child allowance can also be easily filled out online.
