What an age for a children's birthday party: The German »Sesame Street« turns 50. That gives the Cookie Monster a guest appearance in the »Daily Topics«.

Anyone who was a child in the 1970s or 1980s will still have this song in their ears today: »The, the, the / who, how, what / why, why, why?

/ He who doesn't ask remains stupid.« It is the theme song of »Sesame Street«.

But who is a child today?

Often hums the melodies of cartoon series such as "Peppa Pig", "Paw Patrol" or "Ninjago", which can be seen on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

When the NDR broadcast the first episode of »Sesame Street« in Germany on January 8, 1973, this competition did not yet exist.

Strictly speaking, there was almost no competition at all - apart from the »Show with the Mouse«, which started two years earlier.

Ernie and Bert compete with superheroes today

In the past few decades, "Sesame Street" has been modernized several times, new characters have been added, others have disappeared, today there is an app, its own YouTube channel - and Lena Meyer-Landrut sings the title song.

But Ernie and Bert are comparatively rare guests on T-shirts in day-care centers and elementary schools, on playgrounds and soccer fields.

Shriller, faster superheroes dominate there: Chase and Skye from »Paw Patrol« or Lloyd and Zane from the »Ninjago« universe.

On the occasion of its 50th birthday, the NDR is giving »Sesame Street« a party, which should increase its popularity among the young target group even more.

Because what do children like more than birthdays?

And what their parents more than nostalgia?

Bringing your own childhood experiences closer to the children: This is one of the most beautiful things about being a parent.

The anniversary day begins on January 8th at 7:20 a.m. with a special edition of the “Daily Topics” in the first.

Caren Miosga moderates and Cookie Monster speaks the commentary.

Keeekse!

From 5:25 p.m., KiKa will also broadcast a birthday show in which Ernie is planning a surprise party for Bert.

In the ARD media library, "Sesame Street" has already been given a new appearance - a birthday present.

In addition to the current editions, there are classics from 50 years.

Museum doors open at 50

And because 50 is an advanced age and a 50th birthday requires a certain framework, there will be a concert with "Sesame Street" songs in Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie and two exhibitions, also in Hamburg: The BallinStadt Emigration Museum will be presenting props from February 17th and costumes from five decades of »Sesame Street« in Germany, but also explores the show as a global cultural phenomenon.

Because »Sesame Street«, invented in 1969 as a format for educationally disadvantaged children in the USA, is now available in around 150 countries.

From May 7th, the Museum of Arts and Crafts will take a look behind the scenes and explain how the dolls are designed and brought to life.

So it's quite possible that Ernie and Bert will reclaim their place on the T-shirts in German day-care centers this year.

Chase and Skye from the Paw Patrol should be careful.
