Since Knives Out and Glass Onion, classic whodunnit thrillers with a suspicious ensemble have been on everyone's lips again.

But which elementary series and films should one watch after the tongue-in-cheek works of director Rian Johnson?

A whodunnit (roughly: who was it?) is a classic crime story that leaves investigators and the audience questioning who committed the crime at hand, why, and how exactly.

Director Rian Johnson (Brick, Star Wars: The Last Jedi) spent his films Knives Out (2019) and Glass Onion (2022) subverting expectations of the genre while making very good entries to deliver with all classic elements, whereby one bows to several classics and after a long time was able to generate great interest in the whodunnit again.

If you still have an appetite for crime thrillers after the glass onion case, you can still track down a lot that the genre has to offer.

In the spirit of "Knives Out" and southern snooper Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), not all entries and investigators take themselves completely seriously, while others present very dramatic criminal cases with creative resolution.

The After Party (2022-)

In the whodunnit comedy The Afterparty on Apple TV+, pop star Xavier (Dave Franco) is murdered during an afterparty after his 2006 class reunion.

He was thrown off the balcony of his beach house, so the incoming investigator, Detective Danner (Tiffany Haddish), found suspects Indigo (Genevieve Angelson), Aniq (Sam Richardson), Zoe (Zoe Chao), Brett (Ike Barinholtz), Chelsea ( Ilana Glazer), Walt (Jamie Demetriou) and Yasper (Ben Schwartz) are individually interviewed.

The statements of the respondents are presented in very different styles, which is the special highlight of the format.

The series comes from filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (“22 Jump Street”, “The Last Man on Earth”, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), who are currently working on the second season.
