To succeed last year's two winners, Anamaria Vartolomei and Benjamin Voisin, the César Academy, in partnership with Chanel, has chosen to highlight 31 actors and actresses in the best hope category. Six of them talk about their vocation.

Seeing a young actor of my age playing opposite Romain Duris, I thought to myself: "Why not me?"

For a long time I believed that films were cameramen who simply followed the daily life of people, and I dreamed of being followed at school, with my friends... It was while filming in a short film that I realized it was a job and a huge industry.

But I still see the game as a pleasure and not a profession.

What does one actor have more or less than the others?

An actor looks at a film with a professional eye, he sees its making.

On the other hand, what an actor has less of is the absence of a fixed agenda.

The day when I said to myself: “I will be an actor”…

The evening when The End appeared at the end

of Charlie Chaplin 's film

City Lights .

It was October 27, 2010.

What does one actor have more or less than the others?

What an actor has less, but also more than the others, is that he is not a director.

Whether he likes it or not.

With the exception of great masters of cinema like John Cassavetes or Charlie Chaplin.

The day I said to myself: “I will be an actress”…

A day of filming on

Les Amandiers

.

We were shooting a scene in Paris in a little red Alfa Romeo, I caught the eye of passers-by and knew they thought I was an actress.

Valeria played the song “Boule de flipper” by Corynne Charby loudly in the enclosure, the chief operator put his camera on the roof and I heard “Action!”.

This day overwhelmed me because I understood that cinema invented moments of life, freedom and crazy happiness that do not exist elsewhere.

Afterwards, I stopped saying that I was an actress, I said “actress”.

What does an actress have more or less than the others?

I believe that what we have less than others are our words.

We live our lives, on stage or in front of a camera, through the words of others who are, as my character puts it in an audition scene, “bulwarks” that protect from the abyss.

The day I said to myself: “I will be an actress”…

There was no day in particular.

This was done as the filming of Les

Pires progressed

.

Discovering behind the scenes of cinema and realizing that acting was a job, I told myself that it was made for me.

What does an actress have more or less than the others?

A priori, nothing… We all have our own emotions, and I imagine that everyone can become an actor or actress if they really want to.

Why was I chosen?

Because I wasn't scared during my first casting.

I felt confident and my letting go, I think, made the difference.

The day I said to myself: “I will be an actor”…

I was 20 years old, I was studying at university, I was passionate about independent cinema from the 1990s. My reference actors were Daniel Day-Lewis, Sean Penn , Johnny Depp… I started buying books on acting, I was very attracted to them, and as I felt I had a thing for acting, I started.

What does one actor have more or less than the others?

Good actors are perhaps endowed with a greater curiosity which allows them to go further… They dig, ask the right questions, it seems to me.

But as the actor is his own instrument and he spends a lot of time with himself, he can also lack a little altruism!

The day I said to myself: “I will be an actress”…

In 2009, I took part in a show in Rome, and this performance gave me the intuition to enroll in the Conservatory.

It was really the theater that introduced me to this profession.

What does an actress have more or less than the others?

As the actor and the actress only exist in the gaze of the other, this can sometimes give rise to extraordinary experiences, but also lead to a long period of inactivity while waiting for ambitious projects.

Out of conviction, I refused many offers before meeting Alice Diop.
