For the first time in more than ten years, the tobacco tax will be increased.

By 2026, smoking is set to become steadily more expensive.

This also applies to e-cigarettes.

Berlin – Anyone who wants to smoke will have to dig deeper into their pockets in the future.

As the federal cabinet had already decided in spring 2021, another of several steps to “adjust” the tobacco tax will take effect from January 2023.

This was reported by the

dpa

news agency with reference to a press release from the Federal Ministry of Finance.

According to this, the tobacco tax for a pack of 20 cigarettes should increase by an average of 8 cents per year in the period from 2022 to 2026.

According to dpa

, the average price of 7.60 euros per box has been increased by 10 cents

since January 2023 ;

and is therefore at

7.70 euros

.

Prices for e-cigarettes are skyrocketing due to the increased tobacco tax

It was quiet about this topic for a long time.

The last "adjustment", i.e. increase, of the tobacco tax was implemented more than ten years ago.

An adjustment is therefore necessary, as the Federal Cabinet announced in the press release.

As with the last adjustment in 2011, a “regular, moderate increase in the tariffs for cigarettes and fine-cut cigarettes” should also take place this time by 2026.

The first changes in consumers' wallets were already clearly noticeable last summer;

at least for everyone who smokes e-cigarettes.

Because since July 2022, the purchase of liquids that are vaporized and inhaled has not only been subject to VAT, but also tobacco tax.

Whereas 10 milliliters of finished liquid previously cost around five euros, smokers now have to shell out around seven euros for it.

Ascending trend.

Tobacco tax will be adjusted: Packets of cigarettes will cost more than 8 euros in the future

Because the prices for e-cigarettes are also to be gradually increased in the future.

According to the

dpa

, the tax for 10 milliliters of liquid should first climb to two euros plus 19 percent VAT, then to 2.60 euros plus VAT and finally, from 2026, to 3.20 euros plus VAT.

The next tax increase here is not planned until 2024.

For conventional fags, 15 cents per pack will be added in 2025 and 2026.

Smoking ban for youth protection reasons: New Zealand and Denmark go the extreme way

One of the reasons given by the federal government for the increased tobacco tax is the protection of minors.

What is likely to be a thorn in the side of smokers here is still a manageable measure compared to the anti-smoking campaigns of other countries.

New Zealand and Denmark, for example, have declared war on trucks in general.

New Zealand would like to be smoke-free by 2025, while its German neighbors would like to make cigarettes inaccessible to everyone born after 2010.

This would make Denmark the first country in the EU to want to ban smoking.

Reasons for consumers to cut back on smoking is undoubtedly the financial aspect.

Last year, spending on tobacco products in Germany was 29 billion euros, according to figures from the Federal Statistical Office.

A savings calculator from the federal government's drug commissioner can help to keep track and cap the costs of smoking.

At the time, the federal government cited the dynamic tobacco market and the consumer behavior of Germans as the reason for adjusting the tariffs.

In addition, the health, especially of minors, should be protected.

Ironically, recent figures have revealed that young people are starting to smoke again.
