At the Hebrew language conference "Lashon Rishon" the veteran sports broadcaster will be saluted for the language coins he minted over the years, in commemoration of his 80th birthday • "I think it caught on mainly because of the music and the emotions that accompanied it," he shares

"Hallelujah" and "that's how you don't build a wall" are just some of the idioms coined by the legendary sports broadcaster Yoram Arbel.

At the Hebrew language conference "Leshon Rishon", which stands for groundbreaking Hebrew and will be dedicated to the celebrations of the 140th anniversary of Rishon LeZion, a tribute session will be held to Arbel, who is celebrating his 80th birthday this year.

"It's not that I made many innovations in the Hebrew language, and the truth is that my most famous sentence is actually incorrect in Hebrew," says Arbel, one of the top sports broadcasters in Israel, who coined many phrases.

"Instead of 'That's not how you build a wall,' in the Hebrew of the academy I should have said 'That's not how you build a wall,'" he laughs.

Didn't buy, but totally caught.

"True. I think he caught on mainly because of his music, and because of the emotions that accompanied it. In my broadcasts, I allow myself freedom, I don't make serious mistakes in Hebrew. I won't say 'three exiles,'" he laughs, "but at the same time, I'm not careful either To say Haifa in Mal're, it's Maccabi Haifa (in Mal'eil)."

According to him, "It was completely spontaneous, but shortly after the event I already understood that there was something beyond. I think it was quoted in one of the newspapers right after the game, and slowly it took root in the language. Today it is used in different contexts - from politics to economics, whenever you want To explain how to do something properly. I admit that I didn't think it would be a form of language, and also the chanting of the 'Hallelujah' is something that jumped out at me after some amazing move by Earl Williams in Maccabi Tel Aviv."

How does it feel to know that you managed to produce tongue coins without meaning to?

"It's very nice, and it's something I'll also talk about at the conference - how the Hebrew language should be used in sports broadcasts, to what extent it should adhere to the strict rules and how much freedom can be left there. I think it can be popular, provided that the basic rules are followed."

Does turning 80 bring soul-searching?

what are you doing today?

"I think that every 80-year-old person thinks about what he has done up to this day and what is still waiting for him. I try to maintain my health and play golf, lead my life with fun, broadcast as usual. The world goes on as usual, only today I don't do the big events, like the World Cup. There a decision was made to rejuvenate the system."
