(ANSA) - ROME, 09 JAN - The promoter of Vatican justice Alessandro Diddi has launched new investigations into the disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi which took place in Rome in June 1983.

A file has been opened "also on the basis of requests made by the family in various locations", Vatican sources explained to Ansa, confirming the news.

"It's a very positive thing" commented Emanuela's brother, Pietro, recalling that "for many years" the family has been asking for collaboration and hoping to be summoned and to be able to take minutes.

"We have been waiting to be heard for a year" highlighted the family's lawyer Laura Sgrò, according to whom the decision could have been influenced only by the proposal for a parliamentary commission of inquiry.

"We are working on setting up a commission of inquiry that will be able to support the work of the investigators, in the coming weeks we will accelerate in this sense", declared the deputy of the Democratic Party, Roberto Morassut, first signatory of the proposal of the parliamentary commission of inquiry.

Positive comments on the Vatican decision also from the League and the M5s.

The starting point of the work of the Vatican judiciary will be the analysis of the acts and documents relating to the old investigations.

The proceeding of the Rome prosecutor's office on the disappearances of Orlandi and Mirella Gregori, the latter taking place on May 7, 1983, was filed in October 2015 at the request of the then chief prosecutor Giuseppe Pignatone, now president of the Vatican court.
