Watching Netflix on a friend's account.

It was nice, but it will soon be over.

But there is a way to transfer the data of your own profile.

Hamm - If you ask your friends and acquaintances whether someone has Netflix, you will often get the answer: "Yes, I am using someone else's account." Account sharing is common among users of the streaming service - and a thorn in the side of those responsible.

Therefore, the end of password sharing in the current way was announced for early 2023 in Germany.

However, this does not mean that anyone who watches films and series via someone else's account on Netflix will lose their own profile with all their user data.

Save Netflix data despite account sharing: Transfer account despite the end

An exact date for the big changes to Netflix account sharing has not yet been set.

Users in Germany should be prepared for the fact that the time has come as early as the beginning of 2023.

Then only people who live in the same household as the owner of the Netflix account can use the service for free via their own profile.

This has been in Netflix's terms of use for a long time anyway.

So far, however, it has been tacitly tolerated if the account was shared with people from other households.

However, when the changes occur, it does not mean that all non-household profiles are suddenly deleted.

On the one hand, there is the option of remaining logged in to the previous account, as wa.de reports.

Then, however, a monthly surcharge applies.

The monthly subscription price should increase slightly for each non-household profile.

An exact price has not yet been determined.

In South America, where this approach has been tested since the beginning of 2022, an additional $3 is required for each non-household profile.

In view of the new circumstances, quite a few users will certainly toy with the idea of creating their own account directly.

But wouldn't all the data from the previous profile then be lost?

After all, many films and series have ended up on the watch list over time and many titles that have already been watched have been rated, whereupon the Netflix algorithm generates watch suggestions.

New Netflix account: How the profile transfer works

But the profile data can be salvaged quite easily.

Since October 2022, Netflix has offered the option to transfer the profile to another account.

So if you were previously watching with your own profile via a friend's account and are now creating your own account, profile transfer is the right option for you.

What you need to do to keep your profile data even after opening your own Netflix account:

Netflix account sharing: How to find out who's watching me

But it's not just those who benefit from account sharing who have questions about the forthcoming changeover.

The kind account owners are also currently vigilant.

But you don't always have an overview of who is actually watching everything.

Does the ex-partner possibly still have the login data?

And who is actually watching when and on which device?

And could that become a problem and lead to higher costs?

To get an overview, since November 2022 there has been the option “Manage access and devices”.

This gives you an overview of which profile was used to access Netflix and when, using which devices.

And if something strikes you as odd, you can also log out of this overview on the devices.

Incidentally, this is also practical if, for example, you log into your account via the local TV while traveling in a holiday apartment and later forget to log out.

You can now easily do this remotely with the new setting options.

The new rules for sharing Netflix accounts are not the only innovations that consumers will have to prepare for in 2023.

Germans also have to be prepared for innovations in taxes, pensions, health insurance, child benefit and everything to do with cars and AU.
