January is the month of good intentions – and at the top of the list for many Germans is the desire to drink less alcohol or not to drink at all for a while.

After all, the past Christmas holidays are traditionally the time when there is a lot of drinking going on.

But is it really worth giving up for a month if you've overdone it before?

At what point does drinking become dangerous, where does addiction begin?

And how can you live a more sober life when alcohol is omnipresent and seems to be part of many celebrations?

That's what our next issue of SPIEGEL Spotlight is all about.

Food journalist and author Biringer speaks from her own experience: She started drinking at the age of eleven - and stopped in her early 30s.

Educated, successful women in particular are reaching for the bottle more and more often, she says.

Among other things, because a fine drink now goes well with the image of the power woman and at the same time is an easily available means of temporarily anesthetizing problems.

Addiction officer Blienert is also of the opinion that the way Germans deal with alcohol is "playing it down".

Germany is also internationally regarded as a high-consumption country.

Among other things, Blienert advocates a complete ban on the sale of alcohol to young people under the age of 18.
