Spring bloomers such as tulips and daffodils come onto the market as early as the beginning of January, as the
Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR)
knows.
Most of these come from greenhouses in the Netherlands.
Consider the following tips when purchasing:
Look at the origin: the closer to the country of origin, the better.
Are the flowers fresh?
Do the test: If the tulips squeak when you rub them lightly together, they are fresh.
According to the NDR
, even if the tulips are sprayed, there is
no acute risk for the consumer.
Roses, on the other hand, are usually more contaminated with pesticides.
Play it safe and plant the bulbs in the ground yourself in autumn.
Then you can count on flowering between March and May.
