The prices for popular mobile phone tariffs have risen by a full ten percent.

O2 and blue are the first, will others follow suit?

Kassel – Prices are rising in many areas: Now the tariffs for mobile communications are also rising.

The O2 and Blau brands have announced that they will increase prices by up to ten percent.

The basic prices for the mobile phone brands of Telefónica Germany should increase significantly, said the CEO, Markus Haas, to the

Handelsblatt.

The increases are expected to come this spring.

Higher base prices: O2 and blue increase prices massively

“Unlike in the past, more performance at the same price is no longer possible,” Haas clarifies.

So far, however, only new customers should be affected by the higher basic prices.

Telefónica Germany would like to avoid the risk of special terminations for existing customers, as

inside-digital.de

writes.

Higher prices at Blau.de (example):

Instead of the previous €16.99, €18.69 could soon be due here.

Because the Telecommunications Act grants the mobile phone customer under § 57, in such a case, the "contract without observing a period of notice and without costs to cancel".

However, this only applies to existing contracts; consumers could have to reckon with price increases in the event of contract extensions.

Same service for more money: a break with the previous pricing policy

The announced price increases affect the basic prices of the providers, so all tariff classes of blue and O2 should be affected by the bank.

The fact that Telefónica Deutschland is increasing the basic prices of its mobile phone tariffs is a break with the previous development of mobile phone tariffs in Germany.

  • Price increases announced at O2 – This is how the prices could develop

  • Tariff Free Unlimited Max:

So far, the premium tariff from O2 cost €59.99 per month, soon customers could have to pay €65.99 for the same service.

  • O2 Free M:

The popular mid-range tariff could soon cost €32.99 instead of the previous €29.99.

So far, the basic prices have remained largely at the same level.

Until recently, changes were implemented almost exclusively via the included services, as

inside-digital.de

writes.

But not only the prices are rotated at O2.

More speed: O2 wants to unlock 5G for multiple users

By the end of 2025, Telefónica Deutschland wants to implement nationwide coverage with 5G for its in-house brand O2.

So far, 5G was only available for selected tariffs.

With the increase in basic prices, more tariffs for 5G operation will soon be activated, as Haas announced to the

Handelsblatt

.

It is not yet known whether 5G will also be activated at the subsidiary Blau.

Higher Prices: Will the Competition Jump on the O2 and Blue Bandwagon?

The announced price increases for O2 and Blau could be seen by the competition as an opportunity to raise their own prices as well.

So far, however, Telekom, Vodafone and Co. have not announced anything of the kind for their mobile communications division.

Vodafone had already increased the prices for the Internet offer in November 2022, as reported

by dslweb.de

.

Due to increased costs for the "technology or the maintenance of the complex infrastructure", Telekom had already increased the tariffs for fixed network telephony in October 2022, as the comparison

writes.

Prices are not only rising in the mobile communications sector, Netflix can also become more expensive for many users.
