Pension reform: at what age will you finally leave?

2023-01-10T17:07:32.318Z

SIMULATOR – The government unveiled its pension reform on Tuesday. If it comes into force, as planned, in September 2023, the legal retirement age should reach 64, with 43 years contributed, for the 1968 generation. Find out what changes for you.

White smoke for pension reform... Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne presented this Tuesday, January 10 a bill aimed first at "

preserve the pay-as-you-go system

".

A text that has been repeatedly postponed in recent years.

Emmanuel Macron's campaign promise and true cornerstone of his second five-year term, he notably provides for the postponement of the legal age of departure to 64, against 62 at present.

This reform will be applied gradually from September 2023, at the rate of three additional months per year, until 2030. The 1968 generation will then be the first to fully suffer the consequences, while people born after September 1961 will be slightly affected.

Calculate your retirement age

All those born after this date will therefore have to work longer.

At the same time, the text provides for an increase in the contribution period.

This will increase by one quarter per year and will reach 43 years for the 1965 generation. The Touraine law, adopted in 2014, previously provided for this threshold to be reached in 2035 for people born in 1973. Find out what is changing and your new starting age thanks to the

, based on your age, your date of entry into the labor market, your gender and your number of children.

The special regimes (SNCF, EDF-GDF, RATP) are not included in our calculation.

On the other hand, the reform acts on their abolition.

A so-called “grandfather” clause must be introduced for everyone, which means that new hires, from September 2023, will no longer benefit from the same many advantages, such as early departure for example.

The members of the Comédie Française, the dancers of the Paris Opera and the sailors-fishermen will remain exceptions.

Members of the active categories of the public service (military, police, prison administration) or even hospital and paramedical staff are not included in our calculation either.

With this new reform, they will have to work, like the others, for two additional years.

However, they will be able to continue to leave until five or ten before the legal age, that is to say at 59 or 54 years.

Modified but maintained “long careers”

Our tool takes into account “long careers”.

This mechanism allows those who entered the labor market early to leave before the age provided for by law.

The new text provides that those who started before the age of 16 can leave at the age of 58;

between 16 and 18 years old from 60 years old;

between 18 and 20 years old from 62 years old.

Everything will depend on your number of quarters contributed at the end of the year of your 16, 18 or 20 years.

The contribution period is also reduced for those who started their career very young, such as apprentices, before the age of 16.

In addition to "long careers", several other provisions may justify retirement before the legal retirement age with a limited number of contribution quarters: disability, permanent incapacity, gradual retirement with continuation of partial professional activity, arduousness (with the professional prevention account) or exposure to asbestos.

These adjustments should not be rushed with the executive's proposal.

Other individuals can also obtain a full-rate pension at age 65, without condition of quarters contributed.

These are essentially caregivers or parents of a disabled child.

For them either, no transformation will occur with the reform desired by the government of Elisabeth Borne.

One quarter = 150 times the hourly SMIC over the period

Another specific feature of the system is that certain “out of work” periods can thus be counted.

If you have done your military service (or now your national service), if you have been fully or partially unemployed or have been on sick leave, a maximum of four quarters, for each situation, can then add to your career record.

Finally, a child may give the right to four additional terms for his mother in return for the consequences of maternity or adoption on his professional activity.

This same duration is offered for the time devoted to education during the first four years of the child.

Since 2010, these trimesters can be divided between the parents.

On this side too, no evolution planned with the text of Emmanuel Macron.

As a reminder, a quarter is considered validated when you pocket a salary equivalent to 150 times the hourly SMIC during it, i.e. 1690.50 euros on January 1, 2023. In order to validate a full year, you must therefore receive a remuneration greater than or equal to 6792 euros during this period.

The vote on this reform by Parliament is currently scheduled for early spring.
