If you have a tiny baby at home, you've probably noticed that around the age of four months he starts reaching out in a way that becomes organized and refined as time goes by.
It can be towards the toys hanging from the university, towards the mobile phone hanging from the bed or cart, towards an object that you have lifted in front of or above it.
Reaching out is one of the most important ways in which your baby experiences the world, and they are the first step towards his proactive introduction to the environment.
Dekla Shalom
, consultant for infant development using the first step method and manager of the "Smiles" center in Petah Tikva, shares some important tips that will help you encourage your baby to reach out and start his research work:
turn the body to learning
The palms of the hands should be bare, of course, but to notice that the mouth - the main organ of investigation - should also be free.
As soon as the baby has a pacifier in his mouth he will move, explore and react much less.
Take the pacifier out of his mouth from time to time and provide him with optimal learning conditions.
Make sure to move in all directions
. Our range of motion is very wide, so it's good to challenge the baby and allow him to reach for objects from anywhere around him.
In other words - don't be satisfied with lifting a toy above his head, but also do it from the side, from below, etc.
Challenge the distance
Part of the exploration is the distance you can reach.
Try to reach the maximum.
Of course, the baby will first try holding objects that are close to him, but it is therefore worth moving the object away each time so that he increases his ability to reach and hold.
Of course, this does not mean throwing him a toy somewhere far away and hoping that he will find the way to reach it...
give room for the baby's frustration
That's part of the point.
Making an effort is annoying, but the effort brings with it better muscular work and after that will also come the sense of achievement of my effort and success which is very important for the learning process.
Offer objects with different textures and
allow the baby's hands to learn the world, even the less pleasant and caressing parts of it.
Let him explore, reach and touch even sticky, spiky, rough, etc. materials.
Pay attention to symmetry,
don't dismiss the baby's side preference with "well, he's right-handed".
Continuing with the movement section, it is important that you pay attention to symmetry and make sure that the baby is indeed stimulated to reach out in any direction, left and right.
In any case, the dominance of sides in writing and using hands will only be established towards the age of 3-4, so there is still time to make statements about it...

The Jama application was established with the aim of responding to mothers of babies between the ages of birth and three, and to gather for them content, activities, tips from experts and videos that will accompany them throughout this challenging period.
All the content in the application "grows" together with the baby and is precisely adapted to the stages of his development, so that the mothers receive only what is relevant to them and interests them at any given moment.
The Jama app is the place for mothers in Israel to meet and get to know other mothers around them, and to create new and exciting friendships in the fascinating journey.
