is German Apple Day.

The apple is one of the most popular local fruit varieties in Germany.

Reason enough to dedicate a nationwide holiday to it and to share some facts about the fruit with you.

Are you ready?

  • There are more than 30,000 apple varieties worldwide, around 

    2,000

    of which come  from Germany.

  • With a share of around 20.8 percent,

    Elstar

    is one of the most important apple varieties for agriculture in 2021/22 .

    Far behind

    are Braeburn

    (10.6%),

    Red Prince

    (10.3%) and

    Gala

    (8.3%).

  • On average, everyone eats around

    25 kilograms

    of apples per year, whether as juice, cake or pure.

  • Apples belong to the

    rose

    family 🌹.

  • Apples help other fruit ripen because they release the plant

    enzyme ethylene

    .

    So always store separately.

  • The apple was considered a token of love

    in ancient Greece

    and was presented with a marriage proposal.

That's how it's done:

You only need a few ingredients:

  • Dough:

  • 160 grams of wheat flour

  • 150ml milk

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 tablespoon of sugar

  • 1 packet of vanilla sugar

  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder

  • 0.5 tsp cinnamon

  • 1 pinch of salt

  • 600 grams of apples

  • 800 ml frying oil

  • Besides that:

  • powdered sugar

  • Vanilla sauce

The preparation is simple:

  • Sift wheat flour into a mixing bowl.

  • Add the milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla sugar, baking powder and salt and mix with the beaters of a hand mixer to form a homogeneous dough.

    Put aside.

  • Wash the apples, peel as you like, remove the core with an apple corer.

    Cut each apple into 2 cm thick slices.

  • Dip the apple slices into the batter so that the slices are well covered with batter.

  • Heat frying oil in a saucepan.

    Fry the apple fritters in it until golden brown on both sides.

    Drain on kitchen paper and immediately dust with icing sugar.

  • Serve warm with vanilla sauce.

  • Clean up!

  • Everything tastes better fried, right?
