When an Aldi customer checked the origin of his shrimp, he came up with a surprising result.

Because there were two whole years between catching and freezing.

Munich – Fish and seafood are not to everyone's taste.

But those who like them benefit from healthy fats and lots of protein.

As with all other foods, however, the origin is becoming increasingly important.

Seals and other proofs of origin are intended to show consumers whether the goods are organic, regional and sustainable.

"Aldi, I have questions": giant shrimp disappeared for two years - origin unclear

But not all supermarkets and discounters are completely honest when declaring their products.

The discounter Lidl is said to be using misleading seals to trick and pretend sustainability where there is none.

A study by the Ökotest consumer portal also showed that organic seals are not a reliable guarantee of real sustainability, the absence of unnecessary animal suffering or fair payment.

Meanwhile, the discounter Aldi wants to convince consumers of its sustainability with proofs of origin.

ASC seals adorn many of its fish and seafood products.

However, when a customer wanted to know more about where his frozen shrimp came from, he encountered a major inconsistency.

Contradictory information about origin and age - "How does that work?"

Under the photo, which is intended to prove his suspicions, the Facebook user reconstructed the route taken by the shrimp from a South American producing country to a German freezer.

As can be seen from the packaging, the crustaceans were raised in a certified aquaculture facility in Ecuador and frozen on November 25, 2022.

However, the Facebook user was not satisfied with that.

Because the printed QR code allows customers to find out more information about their product.

However, after entering the Aldi transparency code, he received a confusing message.

Instead of Ecuador, the king prawns are said to come from Venezuela.

And they were caught on October 17, 2020 - two full years before they were frozen.

Suspicions about strange information: shrimp disappeared for two years

"How does it work?

What did you do with the shrimp between October 2020 catching and November 2022 freezing?” asked the Aldi customer in the post.

"A valid question," replied one commenter.

Because raw seafood whose cold chain has been broken is potentially harmful to the consumer, as some vacationers have found out.

Another user reported a similar case.

"According to the Aldi transparency code, our Schlemmerfilet never existed." He therefore has a clear demand for the food giants: "If you offer something like this, you should expect that it will also be used!" Merkur.de about the case of the missing shrimp, Aldi Süd has not yet reacted.

Vegans can safely ignore the seal economy for meat, fish, eggs or shrimp.

But you no longer have to do without the taste.

Because last year, two company founders presented a vegan shrimp on the TV show Höhle der Löwen, which is said to come close to the taste of the original.
