The criminal process for breaking into the Green Vault in Dresden is likely to end with imprisonment for the accused. That's not all: the restoration of the jewels is very expensive.

After returning part of the stolen jewels from the Green Vault, the Dresden State Art Collections (SKD) are now asserting claims for damages.

The exact amount of damage is still being determined, said SKD spokesman Holger Liebs.

For this purpose, the Free State of Saxony has submitted a so-called adhesion application to the Dresden Regional Court in the current criminal proceedings.

It is foreseeable "that civil claims can be successfully asserted against the accused".

According to the indictment, jewelry consisting of 4,300 diamonds and brilliants with an insured value of over 113 million euros was stolen during the burglary in November 2019.

About three years after the burglary, part of the loot turned up again shortly before Christmas in the course of talks between defense lawyers and the public prosecutor's office - some of it severely damaged.

As part of an agreement that has now been reached with the court, five of the accused are to receive discounts if they also make comprehensive confessions.

The sixth defendant denies involvement in the crime with reference to an alibi.

According to the information, the SKD claim is not only about damage to the stolen jewelry, but also to the building and the showcases.

The damage to the recovered objects could be "almost completely" restored, the SKD said, and their condition and the respective measures should be discussed in a commission of experts.

Since the valuables are evidence in criminal proceedings, they could only be issued after the end of the trial.

On Tuesday, after an initial check of the returned pieces of jewelry, an SKD restorer in court named a damage sum of 22 to 26 million euros.

But that will only be known in the course of the restoration.

She put the effort for this at 126,000 euros - without the missing stones.
