A car drove into a crowd of pedestrians in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, killing at least five people.

The police said 13 other people were injured.

The accident happened on Wednesday around 5:25 p.m. local time at an intersection in the city of 19 million people.

The cause was initially unclear.

Chinese media published images of the scene of the accident with the victims lying on the ground.

In it, the driver got out of his car after the accident and threw several handfuls of banknotes in the air before the police took him into custody.

22-year-old driver came from another city

The Guangzhou police chief said on the online service Weibo that the police took the driver for questioning and launched a thorough investigation into the incident.

The driver is therefore a 22-year-old man who does not come from Guangzhou but from another city in Guangdong province.

It was only on Tuesday that a 28-year-old caused a stir in Shanghai when he drove his car into a hotel lobby and wreaked havoc there.

He had previously argued with hotel employees.

Nobody was injured in the incident.
