Condensation forms on the inside of many skylights, especially in winter.

However, mold can quickly form on wet windows.

You have probably already discovered condensation on your window panes in the morning.

Water also tends to condense on skylights during the cold season.

Why is that - and what to do now.

Condensation on the skylight: the cause of wet windows

Condensation forms on skylights whenever warm, moist air meets a cold surface.

Warm air absorbs more humidity than cold air.

The humidity in the rooms is then condensed as condensation on the panes, which have cooled down overnight.

Skylights are particularly often affected by condensation, as the portal

Dach.de

informs.

This is due to the fact that the humidity in the attic is often the highest.

This is where the rising, warm air of the house collects and with it the humidity that is caused by breathing, drying laundry, showering or cooking.

The water then condenses on the coldest part of the room, which is usually the skylight.

According to the manufacturer

Velux

, the sloping design of the skylight also contributes to the fact that more condensation collects here.

In the meantime, condensation is becoming more and more common, which is due to the good insulation of new buildings.

The warm, humid air can no longer escape as well as in old buildings, which in turn increases the humidity.

What to do if condensation has formed on the roof window?

If skylights are often wet, it's not just a question of appearance: Mold can quickly form due to the wetness.

Mold spores are found everywhere in the house.

With constant moisture and a good breeding ground (wood, paint), mold feels really comfortable and then begins to multiply.

That's why you should always wipe off the condensation with a cloth - preferably every morning after getting up.

The next step is to tackle the root causes.

How do I avoid condensation on the skylight?

The easiest way to prevent condensation on the roof window is sufficient, regular airing.

In this way, the moist air gets outside and the dry outside air gets inside.

The rule of thumb is: air the room for about five minutes three to four times a day.

Draft is particularly effective.

Under the roof, it can even make sense to ventilate every two hours if necessary.

The humidity should be between 40 and 50 percent, with a room temperature of 21 degrees.

Roller shutters on the skylight and honeycomb blinds can help to keep the room temperature constant and thus prevent condensation on the skylight.

Also, avoid drying your laundry in the apartment, preferring to dry it on the balcony.
