Despite a prominent line-up of stars, the Golden Globes ceremony, which was broadcast live on television again for the first time, met with little interest.
According to preliminary figures from the NBC broadcaster on Wednesday, only 6.3 million viewers watched the gala in Los Angeles – fewer than ever.
An NBC spokesman pointed out that the gala usually airs on Sunday nights when ratings are higher.
This year, however, it was moved to Tuesday nights to avoid overlapping with the popular American football league.
The Golden Globes are awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), and their presentation traditionally marks the start of award ceremonies in the international film business.
Last year, however, the ceremony was not televised amid allegations of lack of diversity and corruption.
After the HFPA subsequently inducted more than a hundred non-white members, NBC broadcast the gala again this year.
However, the contract was only valid for this year's 80th Golden Globes ceremony, how it will continue in the future is still open.
As the industry journal »Blickpunkt:Film« reports, the reach has almost tripled compared to the 18.3 million viewers in 2020.
Only once in the history of the Globes has the reach been smaller - in 2008, when the winners were only announced in a press conference due to the writers' strike.
Six million viewers saw it.
