Firefighter accidentally set his own apartment on fire (symbol image)

A firefighter from Köngen in Baden-Württemberg set his own apartment on fire on Sunday when he tried to fill his decorative stove with ethanol.
He succumbed to his severe burns on Monday.
That is what the police said .
According to the police, the 33-year-old wanted to fill his decorative stove with ethanol around 10:20 p.m. on Sunday evening.
There was an accident, the ethanol started to burn and spread to the man's clothing and the furniture in the apartment.
The man was able to escape from the apartment, but suffered life-threatening injuries in the fire.
He died in hospital on Monday.
The deceased was a member of the volunteer fire department
The fire brigade put out the fire on Sunday, according to the police, they were deployed with four vehicles and 35 firefighters.
There was material damage of at least 100,000 euros.
The man was a member of the Köngen volunteer fire department.
She expressed her sympathy in a Facebook post on Tuesday: "He was always helpful to everyone and always there when someone was needed."
The voluntary fire brigade has lost a "helpful, reliable and very popular comrade".
