The square chewy sweets with a fruity taste have been part of every supermarket checkout for a long time.

However, as one Twitter user noticed, the name and origin are a big mystery.

Munich – They are square, sweet and fruity, small and are part of the standard equipment at most supermarket checkouts: chewy candies.

They serve as a reward for children's patience and have brightened their day for several decades.

As the comedian Ole Waschkau recently noticed on Twitter, hardly anyone knows anything about the name and origin of the popular snack.

Twitter users are puzzled: Supermarket classics with an unknown name and secret origin

Lemon, cherry, orange and raspberry - the chewy sweets with the unmistakable design are available in four flavors.

However, that's the only information revealed on the candy's packaging.

Neither a manufacturer is visible, nor any information that suggests this.

Also noteworthy: "These things have had the same design for 60 years," said Waschkau in his tweet.

Popular children's gift at the supermarket checkout - "Has anyone ever bought it themselves?"

The fact that people of several generations know the candy and know its role in parental shopping is revealed in the comment column.

“Has anyone ever bought these themselves?” asks a user, since most people only know the fruit candy as a gift from the cashier.

It wasn't long before another user enlightened the Twitter community about their name and origin.

They should be called “Boehme Fruchtkaramellen” and according to several commentators and the website of the wholesaler Metro in Delitzsch.

Another fact attracts even more attention.

Incredible price for more than two kilograms of the square fruit candy

“Two kilograms cost 80 cents?” asks a user in disbelief after a quick internet search.

The Metro website agrees.

Those with a sweet tooth can buy 2200 grams of the fruit caramels for less than one euro.

An unbelievable offer for 2000 candies of two grams each with a total of over 8,500 kilocalories as well as a statement.

Because with other snacks and sweets, the filling quantity is constantly shrinking.
