Certain groups of the population can be exempted from the GEZ fees or rather the broadcasting fee, which many will welcome, especially in times of inflation and gas crises.

24hamburg.de reveals how it works and who has this option here.

Exemption from the license fee: When do I have to pay and how much?

According to a survey, more than two thirds of Germans find the GEZ fee inappropriate.

It still has to be paid, otherwise there could be real trouble.

The contribution service regularly checks millions of fee payers and those who do not respond to GEZ-Post are threatened with double payments.

The current broadcasting fees are EUR 55.08 per quarter, EUR 110.16 every six months or EUR 220.32 per year.

Payment is always made in advance on the first of a year, half-year or quarter.

If you pay every three months, you can also pay according to the statutory payment method in the middle of the quarter.

GEZ fees: who can be exempted?

Those who receive certain social benefits do not have to pay the license fee.

These include, for example, some pensioners who can be exempted from the GEZ fees if they receive basic security in old age or care allowance, as well as recipients of citizen benefit, formerly unemployment benefit 2 or Hartz-IV, or people who receive benefits under the Federal Training Assistance Act ( e.g. BAföG or vocational training assistance).

Asylum seekers, recipients of assistance for the blind, recipients of long-term care allowance and severely disabled people whose disability card shows the mark "RF" can also submit an online application for exemption from GEZ fees.

Anyone who does not receive any of these social benefits because their own income exceeds the requirement limit can still apply for exemption from the license fee.

In such a case, one applies for exemption from the obligation to pay broadcasting fees as a special case of hardship.

This is granted if the income exceeds the requirement limit by less than the amount of the monthly license fee of 18.36 euros.

Anyone who waives state benefits can also apply for a hardship case exemption, but must be able to document the waiver of benefits and their approval in writing.

Exemption from GEZ fees: What evidence is required?

In order to be successfully exempted from the broadcasting fee, you must be able to prove in the application that you receive a social benefit.

The certificate from the respective authority from which the service comes - such as the job center - or an approval notice is sufficient.

The name of the social benefit recipient and the respective benefit and the period of benefit must be visible on the proof.

Broadcasting fee exemption: From when and for how long does it not have to be paid?

In general, the exemption from the license fee applies as long as the social benefits that entitle the recipient to exemption are paid.

Those who receive citizen income but then go back to work have to pay radio license fees again when they return to work.

The omission of the exemption requirements must be communicated online, otherwise the new GEZ changes will quickly result in overdue fines.

From 2022 there will also be no more reminders for unpaid contributions.

The abolition of cash payments also represents an important change in broadcasting fees for many payers.

The exemption from the obligation to pay contributions begins when benefits are paid, but can be taken into account retrospectively for a maximum of three years.

The exemption itself is also limited to three years from the date of application.

If you still receive social benefits after this, you must submit a new application.

Exemption from GEZ fees: Roommates also benefit

Those who are exempt from the GEZ fee bring this benefit to their entire household.

Spouses and children up to the age of 25 are then also exempt from the license fee as long as they live in the same household as the applicant.

The same applies to other adult roommates whose income and assets were taken into account when the social benefit was granted.
