Tennis player Naomi Osaka, former number 1 in the world but currently in 47th place in the WTA rankings, announced on social media that she was pregnant and that she wanted to return to play not before next year.
"These last few months away from tennis have taught me a new love and appreciation for the sport to which I have dedicated my whole life," writes the 25-year-old Japanese. "I know I have so much to look forward to in the future, and one thing will be to see my baby watching me play and saying, 'This is my mum.' 2023 is going to be a learning year and I hope to see you early next year as I will be in Australia in 2024. I love you all so much."
A few days ago Osaka forfeited the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament to start on January 16th.
The Japanese, two-time winner in Melbourne, had not explained the reasons for her withdrawal.
