who played with the Yardbirds and led the group has died at the age of 78, his representative has confirmed.
Beck died Tuesday after "suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis," the rep confirmed.
"His family requests privacy while they process this tremendous loss," they added.
Often described as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, Beck - whose fingers and thumbs were insured for £7million - was known as a keen innovator. He pioneered jazz-rock, experimenting with fuzz and distortion effects and paving the way for heavy sub-genres More like psych rock and heavy metal during his career, he was an eight-time Grammy winner, won an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame both as a solo artist and as a member of the Yardbirds.
Musicians and old friends began paying their respects minutes after the news was released.
On Twitter, Jimmy Page wrote, "The six-string warrior is no longer here for us to admire the spell he can weave around our mortal emotions. Jeff can channel music from the sky. His technique is unique. His imagination is apparently limitless. J I will miss you along with your millions of fans."
"With the death of Jeff Beck, we lost a wonderful man and one of the greatest guitar players in the world," wrote Mick Jagger.
"We will all miss him so much."
