NATO and the EU announced on Wednesday the creation of a joint working group aimed at strengthening the protection of their critical infrastructure in Europe against threats from Russia.
This initiative follows the sabotage of the Nord Stream underwater gas pipelines last September in the Baltic Sea and is an illustration of the strengthened cooperation between the two organizations to respond to the consequences of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

For Maxime Lebrun, deputy director for research and analysis at the European Center of Excellence for the fight against hybrid threats, sabotage is above all a weapon "at a lower cost".
According to the researcher, the objective of sabotage is not so much to “destroy” as to undermine the confidence of citizens in the ability of their state to “protect essential infrastructure”.
