Why do many people suffer from pain in the shoulder? - Walla! health

Sometimes it's because of fitness training, sometimes because of too much time in front of a computer, and sometimes it's age. Lots of people suffer from shoulder pain. So why does it happen - and how do you treat it? Here are the answers

Prof. Eran Meman explains which shoulder injuries are common and how to deal with them (Walla system!)

Shoulders are a rather sensitive organ, and anyone who has gone a little overboard with fitness training and paid for it with severe pain knows this.

But beyond inflammation, this almost self-explanatory organ causes several other problems.

Prof. Eran Maman, director of the shoulder surgery unit at the orthopedic division in Ichilov, was a guest on the "Expert Clinic" podcast to explain which shoulder injuries are common and how to deal with them.

Prof. Meman said that problems with the shoulder are a very common thing, and explained that "it is one of the more complex joints, because on the one hand it gives an amazing range of motion - it is the joint with the largest range of motion, which is great, but on the other hand it also causes problems."

The shoulder joint is built in a leaf-like and crater-like shape, and is wrapped by a strong shell and held in place by straps that provide stability and prevent dislocation.

The joint is activated by muscles and tendons that allow it maximum mobility in space.

"The shoulder is a complex organ because it is also connected to the scapula, and it also moves, and it is this connection that enables the great range of motion," explained Prof. Meman.

And our neck also takes part in this complex work.

"A real shoulder examination begins in the neck," explained Prof. Meman, "the nerves that go from the neck to all limbs, and the lower back and legs, can be irritated as a result of a disk or a problem in the neck, the person himself does not know - his shoulder hurts, the fact that the irritation is in the neck at all - the brain does not Can tell if the point of stimulation is here or here, as far as the brain is concerned, it's the same."

An amazing and efficient organ - but exposed to a variety of malfunctions.

The shoulder joint may be damaged by a wide variety of conditions, acute injuries and chronic inflammatory and degenerative diseases that will impair its function and cause pain, suffering and limitation of movement, some of these problems can be solved with conservative treatments such as anti-inflammatory and pain treatment and physical therapy, and if necessary with a variety of surgical treatments.

In any case - if there is a sharp pain or a pain that lasts for a long time in the shoulder area - you should check it.

To the question of what vulnerabilities he sees in his patients, Prof. Meman explained that to a large extent it depends on age.

"From the age of 15 to the age of 25, these are the common problems of people who do a lot of sports, and then suffer an injury, not a pain that progresses slowly. An injury can be a dislocated shoulder, it's an intense pain that makes it impossible to move the arm, you can actually see a change in the shape of the shoulder, and then Usually they go to the emergency room and put the shoulder back in place."

He added that in movies you sometimes see people putting the shoulder back in place by themselves, but that it's really not something you should try at home,

Older people have other problems.

"This can be an injury to the cartilage itself, as happens in a hip or knee joint, where the cartilage wears away and then the bone is exposed and this causes pain and restriction of movement," said Prof. Meman, and it can also be a rupture of a tendon.

"The most common problem in the shoulder at the age of 60 and over is related to the tendons", simply because of the wear and tear of the body.

In both cases, it is highly recommended to do physical therapy to maintain the range of motion, and reduce the pain.

The signs that everyone must know

To prevent shoulder pain in the routine Prof. Meman has a fairly simple advice.

"We all work on a computer, if the keyboard is high relative to the way we sit and we work with our hands forward, it means that the tendons of the shoulder are constantly working. The very simple thing that can be done is to lower the keyboard and make sure that the joints are next to the body," he explained.

And this is true for many professionals.

"Doctors who do ultrasounds, my colleagues, come to me in the morning with pain in the shoulder, and I simply tell them to lower the patient's bed. This is also true for surgeons, dentists, dental hygienists - they work with their arms stretched forward, and this can cause pain," he added .
