Not only tenants, but also residents of a nursing home can get housing benefit from the state - under certain conditions.
Berlin – If a person in Germany needs care, many quickly reach the financial limits.
Inflation and the blatant shortage of skilled workers in the care sector are also driving up costs.
Yes, with the housing benefit reform effective January 1, 2023, more people are entitled to housing benefit.
What many do not know: This also applies to people in need of care who are housed in a nursing home, but also at home.
However, special rules apply to them when the authorities approve housing benefit.
We'll tell you what they are here.

Anyone in Germany who cannot pay the rent for their four walls or the repayment of their real estate loan from their own financial resources can apply for housing benefit.
This is paid in the form of a grant and does not cover the entire rent or installment.
Before the housing benefit is approved, the assets and income are checked.
Those who meet the requirements receive the subsidy from the state.
As already mentioned, residents of nursing homes are also entitled to housing benefit under certain conditions.
The basis for this is income and assets, for which there are, however, tax exemptions.
This means that nursing home residents can also receive housing benefit if they are above the statutory total income.
According to paragraph § 17 WoGG, the allowance for people in need of care is 1800 euros, which must be deducted if:
In the case of a
severe disability
with a degree of 100.
In the case of a
severe disability of less than 100
if the person concerned is cared for at home or in day care or short-term care at the same time.
When applying for housing benefit, the relevant evidence must be submitted.
To what extent and whether the allowance is taken into account is checked and decided individually by the housing benefit offices in Germany.
What is important to note, however, is that the housing benefit is only granted if no other state transfer benefit, such as basic security in old age, is received.

The application for housing benefit must be submitted to the local housing benefit authority.
This can be done in writing on a corresponding application form.
In many federal states this is also possible online.

In general: Residents of homes are also entitled to housing benefit.
However, this is not calculated according to the individual amount of the applicant's rent, as is usually the case.
If a resident applies for housing benefit, the local rent is used as the basis.
Only the location of the home is decisive for the amount of housing benefit.
In many federal states there is a special form for this, the so-called housing benefit application for residents.
