The maximum amount of the supplement for low-income families has increased to up to 250 euros on January 1st.

The benefit is in addition to child benefit.

Many low-income families in Germany are entitled to the child allowance.

Since January 1, 2023, it has been up to 250 euros per month and child.

The benefit is available for those affected in addition to the child benefit, which has also increased.

Both – child supplement and child benefit – are paid together.

Where can I apply for child allowance?

However, the application for child allowance must be submitted separately to the family benefits office, as the Federal Employment Agency informs.

As a rule, those affected receive the child allowance for six months.

If the approval period has expired, you have to apply for the child allowance again.

Child supplement 2023 up to 250 euros – who is entitled?

The child supplement is intended for parents with low incomes.

"Whether you receive child allowance depends on how much income and significant assets you, your partner and your child have," says the website of the Federal Employment Agency quite generally.

The following conditions, among others, must therefore be met:

  • The parents receive child benefit.

  • The gross income is at least 900 euros per month for couples and at least 600 euros for single parents.

  • The child must be under the age of 25 and live with the parents.

It must also not be married or in a civil partnership (registered civil partnership).

  • Those affected would have enough money to support their families if they received child allowance and possibly housing benefit in addition to their income.

Are you entitled to the child allowance yourself?

The website of the employment agency offers help for an initial assessment.

You can apply for the child allowance online, it says there.
