During a police operation in Mosbach, Baden-Württemberg, a man was shot dead with a knife near his ex-partner's apartment.
The deadly shot was fired by the police on Friday, said a spokesman for the State Criminal Police Office (LKA).
Around 1 p.m., several witnesses reported a man "who is apparently in a mental state of emergency and is armed with a knife," said the LKA and the Mosbach public prosecutor's office in the evening.
The 46-year-old attacked the rushed police officers with a knife.
According to the report, the emergency services then used tear gas.
However, this did not work as hoped.
"Following this, a police officer makes use of his service weapon," it said.
Officials immediately provided first aid, but the man succumbed to his injuries on the spot.
On record for domestic violence
The man had been put on record by the police, among other things, because of domestic violence, the investigators said.
According to the current state of knowledge, he was undergoing psychiatric treatment.
The investigations into the background and the exact course of action are ongoing.
Service weapons may only be used as a last resort, emphasized the Ministry of the Interior.
The respective police officer decides on the use of so-called direct coercion in principle on a case-by-case basis and taking into account the principle of proportionality.
The LKA determines how the situation was in the current case.
