The Brazilian government has asked to investigate the former president of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, for an alleged coup attempt.

The decision was taken after the discovery of a draft decree, in the home of former Justice Minister Anderson Torres, which would hypothesize the overturning of the result of the October elections won by Lula.

"Torres' arrest is inevitable, now it is necessary to investigate the participation of former president Bolsonaro and take the necessary measures for crimes against the democratic rule of law," said Senate majority leader Randolfe Rodrigues.

Justice Minister Flavio Dino said there had been a "chain" of "coup" events including the attempt to ignore the result of the 2022 elections and the storming of power buildings in Brasilia last Sunday.

Torres, currently in the United States, justified himself by saying that the document found in his home should have been "shredded" and that the charges against him were taken out of "context" to damage him.

Torres, for whom an arrest warrant has been issued, has already announced through his lawyer that he intends to return to Brazil to turn himself in.
