Lose pounds and increase your lifespan at the same time: If you incorporate two simple routines into your daily diet, you reduce the risk of colon cancer immensely.

If you want to lose weight in a healthy way, you can also reduce the risk of colon cancer.

However, two simple dietary rules should be implemented.

Fiber plays a crucial role.

A healthy diet is not only important for your own well-being.

The risk of colon cancer also decreases if you rely on unprocessed and fresh food and avoid luxury foods.

An unhealthy lifestyle has drastic consequences for many people: For example, one in 19 women and one in 15 men will be diagnosed with colon cancer in the course of their lives, according to the Robert Koch Institute.

Around 27,000 women and 34,000 men are affected every year.

The good news is that cancer can be prevented.

“A healthy lifestyle could prevent 40 percent of all cancers.

Physical inactivity, obesity, an unhealthy diet, stimulants and protection from UV radiation are risk factors for cancer that can be influenced.

These need to be reduced in primary prevention so that cancer doesn't even develop in the first place," says Professor Renate Oberhoffer-Fritz, Dean and Ordinaria at the Chair for Preventive Paediatrics, Faculty for Sports and Health Sciences at the Technical University of Munich.

Two nutrition tips that support your diet and also prevent colon cancer

A large-scale New Zealand study comes to the conclusion that fiber effectively protects against colon cancer.

The team around nutritionist Dr.

Andrew Reynolds of the University of Dunedin in New Zealand found that 25 to 30 grams of fiber per day can reduce the risk of colon cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease by 15 to 30 percent.

The more fiber you eat, the longer you live, concludes the Ärztezeitung.

The German Society for Nutrition and some health insurance companies also recommend a high-fiber diet.

According to the AOK, you should heed the following dietary rules in order to integrate more fiber into your diet:

  • Eat fruit and vegetables five times a day: legumes in particular, such as lentils, chickpeas and beans, contain a relatively large amount of fibre.

  • Replace white flour with whole grain: If you use whole grain products, you increase your dietary fiber content enormously.
