"Today I am once again in Palermo, in the Aula Bunker dell'Ucciardone famous for the maxi trials against the mafia, for the OpenArms trial. I risk up to 15 years in prison for defending Italy and its borders, saving lives and enforcing the law".

The Deputy Prime Minister and Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini wrote on Facebook.

"Giuseppe Conte, Luigi Di Maio and Luciana Lamorgese are expected as witnesses for the prosecution, we will not be bored", adds the leader of the League.

Salvini and the lawyer Giulia Bongiorno, according to the Lega press office, arrived about an hour and a half ago in the Ucciardone bunker room in Palermo for the hearing in the OpenArms trial.

"I don't remember ever hearing of the presence of terrorists aboard the Open Arms that had rescued migrants in August 2019," said former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, leader of the 5Stelle, testifying at the trial of the former minister Interior Matteo Salvini accused in Palermo of refusal of official documents and kidnapping.

According to the indictment, Salvini illegitimately denied the NGO Open Arms with 147 refugees rescued at sea, in August 2019, to land in Lampedusa and equally illegitimately kept the migrants on board, depriving them of personal freedom.

"I don't even remember - added Conte - that someone told me about possible agreements between the Open Arms and the smugglers driving the rescued boats".
