Excise duties are not going down for now. But the government is ready to intervene when there will be more receipts from VAT, Meloni announced, trying to appease the tension that has skyrocketed after the measures decided by the executive against the price increases. Giorgetti: "The government will monitor the price level". Codacons: "It's an absurd decision". (HANDLE)

Tension between the government and the petrol station operators, who announce a two-day strike - from 19.00 on 24 January to 07.00 on 27 January - against what they define as a 'wave of mud' against petrol pump managers and to 're-establish the truth'.

Today a meeting between the government and trade unions in the sector

.

Fazzolari: 'Ours are measures against speculative phenomena'.

Economy Minister Giorgetti specified that in the presence of substantial increases, the government will evaluate the reduction of excise duties using the higher VAT collected.

Excise duties are not going down for now.

But the government is ready to intervene when there will be more receipts from VAT, announces Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni trying to appease the tension that has skyrocketed after the measures decided by the executive against price increases.

The interventions do not go down well with the managers who choose the path of open confrontation: they go on the attack against the "wave of mud", they complain, thrown on the category and proclaim a two-day strike at the end of the month.

The government defends the choices made with the decree on price transparency, but is forced to take measures, convening a meeting with the sector for tomorrow.

Appointment on which the premier herself spends herself: "During the meeting with the category and I will tell them that there is no desire to pass the buck",

he says speaking on Tg1 in the evening.

"All our interventions are to control inflation", he adds almost simultaneously to Tg5, and on petrol he assures: "What the State collects in addition to VAT will be used to lower the price".

At the moment no intervention is envisaged in the decree, according to executive sources, after the words of the Minister of Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti on a possible cut in the event of a price increase.

But the cdm intervenes by "adjusting" a rule that already exists and allows for the reduction of excise duties if the price exceeds at least 2% of the value indicated in the Def: in the event of an increase in the price of crude oil and therefore of VAT in a reference quarter , the increased revenue collected in terms of tax by the State can be used to finance reductions in the final price at the pump.

Some changes to the decree passed just two days ago on transparency were also approved in the cdm, guaranteeing that petrol vouchers will be tax-free until the end of the year.

Now the government's special observation is prices: the executive will "carefully monitor" the level not only of petrol, but also of consumer goods, explains Giorgetti.

Only after the monitoring will further initiatives be evaluated.

And in any case today, he points out, prices are at the levels of August 2022, far from the peaks (above 2 euros) reached when the Draghi government decided on the discounts.

In the meantime, we are still waiting to see the decree in black and white on which, according to what has been learned, doubts have arisen on the idea of setting a ceiling for the prices applied on the motorways.
