Hamburg – Anyone who is given notice usually not only faces a professional problem, but also a financial one.
In order to bridge the time between two jobs, there is unemployment benefit from the state, which the unemployed can apply to the employment agency in such cases.

However, the unemployment benefit does not automatically end up in the account after termination.
It must be applied for – and in good time.
24hamburg.de reveals how this works here.
Register as unemployed in three steps: This is how the Employment Agency proceeds
Anyone who receives notice of termination or no extension in a fixed-term contract usually knows early on that their current employment relationship will soon end.
Even during the probationary period, there is still a notice period of two weeks, which gives you enough time to take care of the necessary steps.
Only employees who have been terminated without notice are in a hurry.
In all cases, you must first register as a job seeker with the responsible agency.
In this step, you make yourself available to the labor market and look for a new job.
In the second step, you register as unemployed with the agency in order to apply for unemployment benefit in the third step.
Step 1: Register as a job seeker – this is how it works
If you know that your current job will end soon, you should register early online as a job seeker or contact your responsible agency by phone or in writing.
In the event of termination or non-renewal with a long lead time, you must register as a job seeker no later than three months before the end of your employment; in the case of a notice of termination within three days.
Attention: Anyone who writes a notice of termination themselves and terminates their employment contract or signs a termination agreement must expect waiting periods of up to three months.
So, if possible, you should get fired.

Anyone who has registered with the employment agency as looking for a job will be helped in the form of advice and job suggestions so that they do not become unemployed in the first place.
The intermediaries of the agencies try to get those affected back into work so that unemployment does not occur in the first place or is only of as short a duration as possible.
There are three steps to unemployment benefit: register as a job seeker, register as unemployed, apply for money.

Anyone who does not yet know the exact end of their employment should still register as a job seeker with an expected end date.
If the date changes, this can be communicated via the consultant or by mailbox message.
Step 2: Register as unemployed – this is how it works
If, despite the attempts to find a new job, it is not possible to avoid unemployment, the second step is to register as unemployed at the employment agency.
This is also possible with an online unemployment registration in combination with a digital ID function or in person at the responsible agency.
You can register as unemployed no earlier than 3 months in advance, but no later than on the first day of unemployment.
The reason for this is that unemployment registrations cannot be backdated and unemployment benefit is only paid from the day of unemployment registration.
The social security through the agency only applies from this day, if you are already unemployed.
Anyone who registers early receives money from the first day of unemployment, which is paid out at the end of the month for the past month.
The only exception: If the first day of unemployment is a weekend or public holiday, it is backdated if the applicant registers as unemployed directly on the following working day.
Step 3: Apply for unemployment benefits – this is how it works
However, registering as unemployed does not automatically mean that you will also receive unemployment benefits.
For the third step, the application for unemployment benefits, whether online or in person, a few more requirements must be met.
In addition to registering as unemployed, whether online or in person, there is also a qualifying period, for example.
This means that the applicant must have worked for at least 12 months in the 30 months prior to becoming unemployed and must therefore have paid into unemployment insurance.
This period of employment does not have to have taken place in one go and can be added up from working times with several employers.
A year of voluntary service also counts as such an occupation.

Another prerequisite for unemployment benefit is that you can pursue an insurable job.
Applicants must be able – and want to – be available for the labor market for at least 15 hours per week.
Important: Anyone who sees unemployment benefit as paid vacation and lets this intention through can be denied unemployment benefit.
The application for unemployment benefit should be sent a few weeks before unemployment begins.
If you send it off later, months that have already passed may also be paid retrospectively, provided you have previously registered as unemployed in good time.
Anyone who is not entitled to unemployment benefit can also apply for citizen benefit online from 2023.
