Around two and a half weeks after Christmas, a burning Christmas tree in a day care center in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district triggered a major fire brigade operation.
In the evening, the Eckernförde fire department was alerted by a fire alarm system.
When the emergency services arrived, the resident had already left her heavily smoke-filled apartment.
She was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation.
Due to the heavy smoke in the stairwell and because the exact number of people in the facility was not clear, more emergency services were called in.
In the end, 50 members of the fire and rescue services were deployed.
According to the information, the fire apartment was on the ground floor, and the fire brigade was able to quickly bring the flames under control.
So far it was unclear why the Christmas tree caught fire.
Burning dry branches of a fir tree can combust explosively, setting entire rooms ablaze in less than a minute.
