After throwing in the towel and abandoning its zero Covid policy, is China now letting go of the controversial Covid mortality figures?
As Beijing insisted the virus had claimed around 30 lives since restrictions were lifted in early December, repeated videos of overwhelmed hospitals and queues outside crematoriums appear to have compelled authorities to operate a turning point in terms of communication: "A total of 59,938 (deaths) were recorded between December 8, 2022 and January 12, 2023", conceded Saturday to the press an official of the health authorities, Jiao Yahui.
60,000 deaths linked to the pandemic therefore, in hospitals alone, of which 5,503 were directly caused by respiratory failure linked to Covid-19.
