C&A, Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof and Primark branches are to close in numerous cities.

Closings are also possible for other companies.

Cologne – Retail has been struggling with falling demand in many sectors for years.

But the past few years have also dealt a serious blow to a number of established brands.

Because in addition to the trend towards online shopping, textile, electronics and perfume shops as well as department stores have suffered and are suffering from the consequences of the corona pandemic.

The energy crisis is also leaving its mark.

Several large chains such as C&A, Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof, Primark and Görtz have subsequently announced branch closures.

24RHEIN lists which closures were last or will follow soon.

At least every third branch of Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof is threatened with closure

  • Up to 90

    of the current

    131 Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof branches

    could be

    closed

, and according to the company, more than 40 are very likely

  • 47 Galeria branches

    are

    no longer to be

    taken over

    by

    Buero.de

  • At the end

    of January 2023

it should be clear which Kaufhof branches will have to close

For the second time in three years, the department store chain Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof is again facing financial bankruptcy.

Therefore, the company has to close dozens of branches again.

According to company boss Miguel Müllenbach, the branch network of 131 department stores is to be “reduced by at least a third”.

Thus, more than 40 locations would probably be affected by closures.

In December 2022 it became known that, according to an internal letter, up to 90 branches may have to close.

However, it is currently still unclear which ones ultimately belong to them.

The plan to take over 47 “Schön hier” Galeria branches has now also failed.

C&A will also close branches in Germany in 2023

  • C&A Kiel

    : Holstenstrasse 1-11, 24103 Kiel

  • C&A Rendsburg

    : Schiffbrückenplatz.

    1, 24768 Rendsburg

  • C&A Elmshorn

    : Alter Markt 6, 25335 Elmshorn

  • Note: as of January 12, 2023;

The fashion chain has been undergoing major restructuring for some time, as a result of which 2023 C&A branches will also be closed.

"The reports about the closures in Kiel, Rendsburg and Elmshorn are correct.

As part of regular analyses, C&A came to the decision to close these branches," says spokeswoman Claudia Junge about 24RHEIN.

The company did not want to give exact reasons or further details.

"Please understand that we do not publish any data on employees and precise information or background information on store closures." It is not yet clear how many closures there will be in total.

As early as 2022, C&A closed 13 branches in Germany alone.

Primark: Two stores are closing for sure - many more could follow

  • Primark in Weiterstadt

    (Gutenbergstraße 3, Loop5) – already closed

  • Primark in Berlin

    (Walther-Schreiber-Platz 1, Schloss-Straßen-Center) – branch will close on April 30, 2023

  • Note: as of January 12, 2023;

Primark currently has 32 branches in Germany, but by 2023 there could be significantly fewer.

It has been clear for some time that two Primark locations will close.

The branch in Weiterstadt near Darmstadt (Hessen) closed at the end of October 2022.

The store in the Schloss-Straßen-Center in Berlin is scheduled to close in spring 2023.

But as it seems, it will probably not stay that way, because sales have fallen massively in recent years: from 926 million euros (2019) to 380 million euros (2021).

Further branch closures at Primark are possible.

"Several branches" of Görtz close - also in Cologne and Düsseldorf

  • Görtz in Cologne

    (Ehrenstrasse 5-7)

  • Görtz in Cologne

    (Trankgasse 11, Cologne Central Station)

  • Görtz in Cologne

    (Aachener Str. 1253, Rhein-Center)

  • Görtz in Düsseldorf

    (Konrad-Adenauer-Platz 14, Düsseldorf main station)

  • Görtz in Hamburg

    (Glockengiesserwall 8, Hamburg Central Station)

  • Görtz in Hamburg

    (Poststrasse 12, Hamburger Hof Passage)

  • Goertz in Mainz

    (Am Brand 8)

  • Görtz in Heidelberg

    (Fahrtgasse 18, Darmstädter Hof Centrum)

  • Görtz in Bingen

    (Basilikastraße 3, CityCenter Bingen)

  • And other Görtz branches throughout Germany

The shoe retailer Görtz also recently had to close shops.

"After checking the profitability of the individual locations and intensive discussions with the landlords, Görtz felt compelled to terminate rental contracts," said a company spokesman when asked by 24RHEIN.

It is currently unclear exactly how many branches will close.

According to Görtz, however, the leases in “a number of branches” were terminated at the end of November 2022.

Including locations in Cologne and Düsseldorf.

These will finally close at the end of February 2023.

As Heidelberg24 reports, the Görtz branch in the Darmstädter Hof Centrum (DHC) will then also be closed.

And that's not all: according to the company spokesman, further branch closures cannot be ruled out.

The company operates a total of 160 stores in Germany.

Retail closures – including at Conrad, H&M, Orsay and C&A

  • H&M

: The global fashion brand H&M has been making massive cuts since 2021.

In 2022 alone, a total of 240 branches around the world were and will be closed.

However, it is unclear which German locations are affected.

  • Orsay

: The German company Orsay was hit much more drastically.

Because in June 2022 all 197 Orsay branches in Germany were closed.

"Stationary retail is largely history," said a company spokesman for 24RHEIN in June 2022.

  • Conrad Electronic

: Not only textile but also electronics retailers are affected by site closures.

Conrad had announced that it would close almost all branches in Germany.

At the beginning of January 2023, only the shops in Mannheim, Regensburg, Hürth and Wernberg-Köblitz were still open.

The latter is to remain in the long term, but as the only market.

For this, Conrad wants to focus more on its online shop in the future.

  • Media Markt/Saturn

: The same applies to the electronics giant Media Markt-Saturn, where 13 branches also closed in 2021 and in 2022, among other things, a branch was closed in Gelsenkirchen.

  • Note: as of January 12, 2023;
