Remembrance and renewal: 20 years after the attack on Cafe Moment in Jerusalem, the historic Bauhaus building was re-inaugurated as a luxury project with a commemorative plaque next to it - telling the story of all Israeliness

Modern iron railings, walls covered with Jerusalem stone, and a commemorative plaque with the names of the murdered: two decades after the murderous attack on the mythical cafe, the unique Bauhaus building in the Rehavia neighborhood was re-inaugurated - this time with the addition of three new floors of luxury apartments.

Let's recall: at the height of the second intifada, on Saturday evening, March 9, 2002, at around 11:00 p.m., against the background of a large demonstration by the 'Shalom Now' movement nearby - a suicide bomber entered a crowded cafe in the heart of the Rehavia neighborhood in Jerusalem, 'Moment Cafe', who until that moment was one of the most prominent symbols of the night life in the city, and detonated the explosive on his body.

The sequel, unfortunately, is well remembered: 11 dead and 54 wounded in what is becoming one of the most shocking attacks in Israeli collective memory.

What added to the great shock that struck the public, was the location of the event - only 50 meters (!!) from the Prime Minister's residence in Balfour.

Also, three weeks later, during which there was also the cursed attack at the Park Hotel in Netanya, in which 30 Israelis were murdered and 160 injured, the IDF launched Operation Protective Wall.

Since the shocking attack, the mythical cafe tried to recover and regain itself, but failed in its attempts and closed.

Later, there was another attempt to reopen 'Cafe Moment' this time as 'Cafe de Paris', which also failed - and the place became another red dot on the Jerusalem map, when a standard commemorative plaque with the names of the murdered was placed there.

In the last 4 years, as part of the Jerusalem Municipality's move to preserve the historical texture of the Rehavia neighborhood, the Jerusalem office, Yoma Architects, worked to preserve the historic building.

As mentioned, during the planning of the conservation work done in the building, it was decided that three new floors of luxury apartments would be added to the two existing floors - which turned the building into a luxury apartment project and a unique boutique building in the shape of a ship, and is considered a unique architectural gem in the Rehavia neighborhood and the Jerusalem landscape in general.

These days, the historic building, as expected for its location, is used for luxury residences - the variety of apartments also includes huge apartments of about 190 square meters, where the rent may reach up to NIS 30,000 per month.

A hundred years have passed since its establishment, the building, which was originally designed in the 1930s in the Bauhaus style, and today provides a stage for modern iron railings, concrete walls covered with Jerusalem stone and a commemorative monument - combines modernism, history and memory in a wonderful way and tells the story of all Israeliness.
