Marisa Abela stars in new Amy Winehouse documentary.
To everyone's surprise, the 26-year-old actress, still unknown to the general public, will lend her features to the famous singer, who died tragically of alcohol poisoning at the age of 27.
The biopic, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, will retrace the life of the British star, from his beginnings in Camden until his disappearance in July 2011, including the release of
Back to Black
, the album which propelled him to the top. charts in 2006.
It's been several months that Marisa Abela is approached for the role of Amy.
According to
Variety , last July, the
Industry
star
was already
“the favorite to play the singer”
.
The producers were keen to hire
"a fresh face rather than go down the pop star casting route,"
the magazine added.
On January 13, on Twitter, Canal Studios announced the big news:
"One of music's greatest artists, Amy Winehouse, is coming to the big screen in the film

Revealed in 2020 in the HBO series, Marisa continued her career by playing Ellie Sutherland in
Cobra
, a series broadcast on Sky One.
In 2022, she also appeared in the crime thriller
Rogue Agent
, alongside James Norton.
And this year, in addition to her role in
Back to Black
, the young woman is starring in
Barbie
, Greta Gerwig's film, with Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie.

is far from the first film to tell the story of the artist.
In 2015, with
Amy
, Asif Kapadia was already trying, through the documentary, to trace this tragic destiny.
Rewarded by an Oscar, this film did not however have unanimous support.
Mitch Winehouse, the icon's father, even found it
"horrible"
.
In an interview with The
Guardian
, he expressed his anger, believing that Kapidia portrayed him as
"greedy and callous"
.
Sam Taylor-Johnson's new project seems, this time, to be approved by the family.
Filming for the biopic begins this week but no release date has been announced yet.
