At the technology dealer Gravis, the future begins now.

Because in the 40 branches of the chain you can no longer pay with cash.

The backgrounds.

Berlin – On Monday, January 16, 2023, an “era” will come to an end at the German technology chain Gravis.

Because the technology dealer, who works closely with Apple, will no longer accept cash payments.

When asked by

Spiegel

, the company had already confirmed that this applies to all 40 branches in Germany and also regardless of the purchase value, they say.

Gravis as a pioneer in Germany?

Technology retailer eliminates cash payments in its branches

In concrete terms, this means that if you only want to buy an accessory from Gravis that costs a few euros, you can no longer use your cash to pay.

Card payment is the only option.

According to Gravis, the proportion of cash payments has been “negligible” for about two years now.

It would only be a "small single-digit percentage" of customers who still pay with cash at Gravis.

In addition, the technology chain emphasizes that its decision was made after "a successful test phase in selected stores based on the above-average acceptance of cashless payments".

From the customer's point of view, cashless payment is "simple, secure, fast - and has long since been learned".

The self-service village shop "Emmas" in Neubruchhausen probably has a similar view

.

Cashless payments for retailers "cheaper, easier and it enables faster processes" - according to Gravis

However, behind the phasing out of cash at Gravis towards exclusively paying with the card, there is not only an orientation towards customer behavior.

Business calculations are also included here.

"For us as a retailer, cashless payment is cheaper, easier and it enables faster processes," says Gravis, describing the advantages of the changeover.

And for customers, the company can keep prices stable for longer in this way.

Does the company fear legal trouble?

Rather less.

After all, the legal situation provides "that legal tender can be excluded if information is provided about it".

And that has happened.

Through instructions in the branches, "in the form of clearly visible displays in the checkout area," as Gravis puts it.

In addition, the General Terms and Conditions (GTC) would provide information about this.

Cash as an emotional topic in Germany: What if card readers fail?

The question remains as to how the displeasure of the consumers, i.e. the customers, behaves in concrete terms.

Gravis would be prepared "that there may still be a need for explanation at the beginning".

But the company assumes “that most of our customers can understand the advantages of cashless payments”.

At least that's the hope.

Payment behavior in Germany

According to the Bundesbank's payment behavior study from 2021, "cash will remain an integral part of the payment behavior of citizens".

The average amount of money in wallets has remained almost the same for many years.

Even citizens who, according to their own statements, prefer to use the card for payments still have an average of 77 euros in their wallets, according to the Bundesbank.

In 2021, cash was still the most commonly used means of payment among Germans.

The Bundesbank states: "58 percent of the transactions noted in the diaries of those surveyed and around 30 percent of the recorded sales were in cash".

However, it is also true that the use of cash is declining compared to other means of payment.

This trend would have intensified during the corona pandemic, at least for the time being.

“Compared to the previous study from 2017, the share of cash payments in relation to the number of transactions has fallen by 16 percentage points over the past four years;

Measured in terms of sales, the decline is 18 percentage points.

And according to the Bundesbank, a large part of this decline is likely to be attributable to the two pandemic years 2020 and 2021.

Cash is an emotionally charged topic, especially in Germany.

Because in the Federal Republic, cash is still paid comparatively often.

In the case of Gravis, a pro-argument for cash payment would be that up to now it has not been a problem to buy technical devices or accessories there anonymously.

It should also not be forgotten that paying cash as one of several payment methods makes customers more flexible.

In the spring of 2022, card payments were temporarily no longer possible at numerous retailers.

There were technical problems with a certain, widely used payment terminal.

From cash to card payment: How Gravis is breaking new ground

In fact, up until now you could pay for every product at Gravis in cash.

At least that's what the company says.

With its 40 branches, the company is one of the best-known German technology dealers and is present in Hamburg, Cologne and Berlin, for example.

According to Gravis, they are even "Germany's largest authorized Apple retail chain".

There is also talk of the “largest certified Apple service partner” in all of Europe.

The company belongs to Freenet AG.
