Femicide in Rome, the restaurateurs: 'We tried to protect the lawyer'

2023-01-16T06:22:20.870Z

Club employees: 'Never kicked the girl out of the bathroom'. I pm: it was premeditated murder (ANSA)

The quarrel in the room, the victim in the bathroom and him going out in a rage into the street: a scene that did not go unnoticed by the many people in the Roman restaurant 'Brado' last Friday, but which was not enough to make those present suspicious of Costantino Bonaiuti's intentions, the 61-year-old engineer and trade unionist of Enav who then killed Martina Scialdone, a 35-year-old Roman lawyer, outside the club, because she refused to accept the end of their relationship.

Indeed, that quarrel between the tables seemed over and none of those present saw signs that it could turn into a tragedy.

But perhaps the lawyer had tried to send signals because she knew she was in grave danger.

The investigations will clarify it, but for those who are now reflecting on what already happened, those words shouted out loud could have been an alarm bell.

And for this reason many in these hours on social media have pointed the finger at both customers and, above all, towards the employees and owners of the restaurant, which remained closed today to express the utmost closeness to the victim's family and friends.

"When she went into the bathroom, the owner instead of giving her a hand told her to go outside so as not to disturb the customers", a witness told Tg3 microphones.

But the staff and waiters deny and indeed defend themselves: "Martina was never kicked out of the bathroom of our restaurant, she went out by herself and we were all now convinced that the man had disappeared, because by now he had left the restaurant. Indeed, we tried to protect her. Then she too went away:

examination of the images of the cameras inside and outside the club, which the investigators are examining to clarify the picture of the story, which ended with the arrest of Bonaiuti: after killing Martina, the 61-year-old escaped by car and was blocked in his home, in the Fidene district.

And it is not excluded that at the end of the investigations, if responsibilities should emerge, a measure could be reached to close the place.

Now the Capitoline Public Prosecutor's Office is also contesting the crime of premeditation against the man, who has already been arrested by the police and will undergo validation interrogation in the next few hours: Bonaiuti, thanks to his license to carry firearms for sporting use, has entered in the room with the gun in his pocket.

A point, that of the possession of weapons, on which many ask to reflect,

starting with the mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri.

Perhaps, he says, "we should reflect on the need to limit the possession of weapons, reducing the number in circulation, to increase everyone's safety".

Among the accusations made by the prosecutors of Piazzale Clodio, in addition to aggravated voluntary homicide, also the abject and futile reasons and to have acted against a person to whom the man was romantically linked.

Even the political front, shaken, tries to react to the story.

Next week the Social Affairs commission of the Chamber is called to begin examining the bill establishing a bicameral commission of inquiry into feminicide and any other form of gender-based violence (already approved by the Senate) and Luana Zanella,

group leader of the Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra and member of the Commission, announces that his party "asked for the scheduling of the bill in the last Conference of group leaders of the Chamber".

"A careful monitoring of a perverse and widespread phenomenon is necessary - he adds - which is difficult to fight, as demonstrated by the latest tragedy that took place in Rome. Despite having cultural tools, professionalism and specific experience, the lawyer Martina Scialdone was killed by a a man whose intentions he feared and in possession of a weapon. The Commission will also be a very important tool for evaluating new contrast measures".
