The
Brescia Court of Appeal
has given the go-ahead for the delivery to Belgium of
Silvia Panzeri
, daughter of former MEP Antonio Panzeri, one of the people who ended up in jail for the Qatargate.
The judges accepted the request of the Belgian judiciary which in December issued a European arrest warrant against Panzeri's daughter and his wife Maria Colleoni.
For the latter, another college of the court has authorized the delivery.
The two women, accused of conspiracy to commit a crime, corruption and money laundering, are under house arrest in Italy.
Now for both the last word belongs to the Cassation.
"The principle of mutual trust between states of the European Union with respect to the right of defense prevailed. We had reasons that could be shared, but instead they were not taken into consideration" Explained the lawyers Angelo De Riso and Nicola Colli,
defenders of Silvia Panzeri,
the daughter of former MEP Antonio Panzeri in prison for the Qatargate case, commenting on the go-ahead for the delivery of their client to Belgium ordered by the Brescia court of appeal.
The two lawyers added that Silvia Panzeri should be delivered to the Haren prison, the same one where the former vice president of the European Parliament Eva Kaili is, and which is considered "less afflictive" than the one in which Panzeri and her ex are collaborator Francesco Giorgi.
The judges, who read the reasons for their decision in the courtroom, as reported by the lawyers, considered the clues that had led to the validation of the European arrest warrant last December as "still existing".
"We will evaluate the appeal in cassation - concluded the lawyers -, we have 5 days of time".
