Increasingly, owners of Netflix accounts are receiving text messages or emails asking them to re-enter their customer data. The letters are neither serious nor from the streaming service. They only target user data.

Increasingly, owners of Netflix accounts are receiving text messages or emails asking them to re-enter their customer data.

The letters are neither serious nor from the streaming service.

They only target user data.

Munich – A fake email is currently circulating asking Netflix users to update their payment information.

The subject of the email reads: "Netflix.DE: You have an action to complete," writes techbook.de.

The sender is "Customer Service".

The e-mail immediately looks like a serious cover letter to Netflix customers.

After all, it contains both the Netflix logo and typical elements such as red buttons.

In contrast to other phishing emails, the email should also be written in the correct font and without spelling mistakes.

There are currently phishing attempts on Spotify.

Fraudsters also pretend payment problems here.

Phishing scammers want to steal credit card details with fake Netflix emails

The email says the subscription has been suspended.

Because you could not have authorized the payment for the next billing cycle of the subscription.

"In order to be able to access all [...] advantages again", the user should update his payment information.

Anyone who believes this and clicks on the red button labeled “Identify” will be taken directly to a replica Netflix page.

If a user deposits his credit card details here, they are passed on to the scammers.

Take a close look and unmask fake Netflix phishing emails

According to techbook.de, the mail was elaborately recreated in the Netflix style.

However, a closer look reveals a few inconsistencies.

The text in the email prompts you to click “Continue”.

However, the corresponding button says "identify yourself." In addition, there are two passages in the text that are rather questionable in terms of language:

  • "Enjoy your new Lupine series with no commitments or ads"

  • "Record your favorite shows and always have something to watch"

Fallen for the phishing?

Affected Netflix users should do this

Streaming provider Netflix takes on the topic on its homepage.

"Did you receive an email or text (SMS) message asking you to provide your Netflix account email address, phone number, password, or payment method?"

If so, it probably didn't come from us," they inform customers.

"Below, you will find some tips to identify suspicious emails or text messages and to protect your account." If you have already received a suspicious email or text message, you can report it to Netflix.

Those affected who have entered their login or credit card details should change them immediately on the platform.

It makes sense to also contact your card-issuing institute and file a criminal complaint.
