Firm fist of the Tenerife authorities against smokers: it is forbidden to light a cigarette on the beaches of the largest island of the Canary Islands.
A decisive move to prevent people leaving their butts on the sand.
Violators will be punished with a fine of 2,000 euros.
The new legislation provides that: "in order to avoid the presence of butts in the sand and the consequent potential contamination of the coast, smoking is prohibited on the beaches and bathing areas of the municipality, with the exception of the areas expressly authorized and designated by the Council".
In particular, anyone who leaves rubbish outside a wastebasket or dirty with butts or chewing gum risks a fine of 2,000 euros.
The legislation also provides for fines for commercial establishments, such as restaurants and beach bars, which do not have waste bins for customers.
Smoking is still permitted on some beaches in the region, but tourists should check for specific signs.
