Stormy and mild: this is how the weather was in this country at the beginning of the year. Cold air is now flowing into the country from the north - and making January wintry again. It could also snow.

After the warm and stormy weather in the first two weeks of January, it is becoming wintry again in Germany overall.

Cold air flows in from the north, causing the precipitation to gradually turn into snow even at lower altitudes, as the German Weather Service (DWD) announced.

"Even if the temperature is usually slightly above zero during the day, the nights are frosty, apart from those directly on the coast," explained a meteorologist.

For many people, this means scraping windows in the morning and having to adjust to slippery roads and paths.

»Even winter clothes can be taken out of the closet again.

When it comes to footwear, a little more profile is recommended,” she advised.

According to the DWD, the background is a low-pressure zone that stretches from the North Sea to the Mediterranean Sea and leads to changeable weather in Germany.

Although some snow falls, the quantities are usually too small for winter sports, the meteorologist explained.

"Only in the southern low mountain ranges and in the Alps can the amounts of fresh snow add up to more than ten centimeters by the weekend."

For Wednesday night, the DWD expected it to snow south of the Vorderpfalz-Fichtelgebirge line.

In the vicinity of the coasts there are occasional showers with changing clouds, but otherwise there is largely no rain.

According to the forecast, the lowest temperatures are plus one degree on the sea and down to minus seven degrees in the mountains.

In some areas there is slippery snow or freezing wet.

According to the DWD, it is very cloudy in the southern half of the day on Wednesday.

From the Upper and High Rhine to Eastern Bavaria and the Neisse, it snows at times, especially in the Black Forest.

For the remaining parts of Germany, the meteorologists predicted cloudy weather and longer sunny weather to the north-west.

Mostly it stays dry, in the vicinity of the North Sea individual snow, rain and sleet showers are possible.

The maximum temperatures should be between zero and five degrees, in the mountains there is light permafrost.
