Even the most optimistic predictions (as optimistic as a global zombie apocalypse can be) did not expect this:
According to the Nielsen index and official viewing data from Warner-Discovery (HBO's parent company), no less than 4.7 million American viewers sat down in front of the screens to watch the first episode of the series, which was launched on HBO and the streaming service HBO Max on January 15.
Since 2010, only one series premiere has surpassed this feat, after the premiere episode of "Dragon House" scorched the screens last summer with close to ten million viewers.
On the other hand, we must not forget that "Dragon House" is actually a spinoff of an established television brand, while the average viewer is probably not familiar with the PlayStation title that "The Last of Us" is based on.
To illustrate, the viewing figures for "The Last of Us", starring Pedro Pascal ("Game of Thrones", "Narcos", "The Mandalorian") and Bella Ramsay ("Game of Thrones"), surpassed those of other beloved HBO premieres, such as " True Detective", "Westworld", "Euphoria", "Heirs", "Chernobyl", "Silicon Valley" and yes, also that of "Game of Thrones".
There is no doubt that the positive buzz and excellent reviews (the series currently sits at a score of 84 on the review weighting site Metacritic), as well as the enthusiastic responses from gamers, who are satisfied that the plot of the series remains faithful to that of the game, contributed to the record-breaking ratings.
For those who haven't watched, "The Last of Us" presents a post-apocalyptic world, where a plague turns humans into a kind of murderous zombies.
The plot focuses on the rugged survivor Joel (Pascal) and the girl Ellie (Ramsey), who embark on a mission that could determine the fate of humanity (any further explanation would be a spoiler).
The first game in the series, considered one of the best video games of all time, was launched exclusively for the PlayStation 3 console in 2013.
The sequel was released for PlayStation 4 in 2020, and the inevitable third installment is believed to be in development, although it has yet to be officially announced.
