The German remake of the anti-war classic "Nothing New in the West" tops the list of nominations at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA).
The film received 14 of the nominations for Britain's top film award announced on Thursday.
The film, based on the 1928 novel by Erich Maria Remarque (1898-1970) about life in the trenches of World War I, received awards in the categories of Best Director (Edward Berger), Best Supporting Actor (Albrecht Schuch), Best Adapted Screenplay (Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson, Ian Stokell) and Best Score (Volker Bertelmann aka Hauschka).
Casting director Simone Bär, who died this week, is also among the nominees.
In doing so, »Nothing New in the West« draws level with the Chinese film »Tiger and Dragon« from 2001, which previously held the record for the non-English film with the most Bafta nominations.
In the Best Picture category, Nothing New in the West competes with British comedy The Banshees of Inisherin and sci-fi action film Everything Everywhere All At Once, both of which received a total of ten nominations.
Baz Luhrmann's biopic »Elvis« (9 nominations) and the drama »Tar« (5 nominations) complete the top field.
The film, which was released worldwide on Netflix after individual theatrical screenings on October 28th, has had a film award season of high hopes, but also frequent disappointments: "Nothing New in the West" was awarded Best Foreign Language Film at both the Critics' Choice Awards and the Golden Globes Film nominated but did not win the awards.
The Oscar nominations will be announced on January 24th.
"Nothing New in the West" is a shortlist in five categories (international film, make-up and hairstyles, film music, sound and visual effects).
